VQC #75: Heading to San Jose

White-Faced Coati

Just a quick entry before leaving the Arenal region and the volcano for the 3 hr drive to the Peace Lodge in the La Paz Water Fall Garden.  The remaining days of the journey will be spent here.  Not sure what we will find but I definitely hope to see more animals and especially the Blue Morpho (one of my special animals)

This morning I had a terrific breakfast, the casado, which is poached eggs, black beans and rice, fried plantain, corn tortillas, agua dulce (hot sugar cane water) and some delicious Costa Rican coffee. Also at breakfast we saw the White-Faced Coati, and a yellow Fly-Catcher.

I took a ton of pictures around the hotel then went to the hot springs for one last good soak where I was massaged by the hot rushing water fall.

Heading for the shower now then to dress and to catch the shuttle to San Jose.

If I can connect there I will.  Much continued success and well-being,

Nicole

VQC #74: The River to Don Pedro’s Farm

In Book II of The Adventures of Isabelle the princess goes on a journey across the sea. At one point she finds herself on the banks of a magic river at night where she meets a very old man, a guide on the river. What happens after this I can not say but I think I may have found my river today. We took a safari rafting tour down the River Blanca. For about 2 hrs we floated and paddled lazily down this very calm river surrounded by lush green forest and lulled by the sound of the gentle water. I added many animals and plants to my sight list to include, crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys and several species of birds.  My favorite bird remains a small brilliant red and black bird named Cherisse’s Tanager.

After about 1.5 hrs we made a stop at a farm, La Rivera,  for a little snack, to see the farm and to meet the owner, a 98 year old man named Don Pedro.  As we lighted from the boat onto the bank I found it ironic that as our guide Pablo offered his hand he said “Princess.”  The story line for Isabelle is never really far from my mind but today it was very much on my mind as I realized that this journey down the river held some clues for me as to the direction of her story. After depositing our life jackets on the rail we ascended the wooden steps to the top of the hill then followed a wooden walkway to a wooden open air structure where we were to take our snack.  We sat at one of the little wooden tables as Pablo went over to have a word with Don Pedro who was already having an audience with some men who looked like his workers. Eventually we were beckoned over to meet the man.  He bade us sit down after introductions and began speaking to us in Spanish with Pablo translating occasionally.  It was very strange because although I understood very little of what he said I noticed his spirit.  I felt very peaceful in that little hot place sitting on a very broken down chair covered in a mat.  Every now and then Don Pedro would direct a comment my way really looking into my eyes.  I decided to just pay attention. It was like visiting an older and precious relative who you know must be cherished for the life they have lived, all they have seen and all that they know.  It was a truly special and totally unexpected experience.

Don Pedro & Pablo (our guide)

We did take a little meal there of hot coffee, cheese (made on the farm), fried plantain and yucca bread, which I have never had and really enjoyed.  Pablo showed us how they used to eat it as kids, the cheese with the plantain.  I had never had that either and it was delicious. As we ate and sipped our coffee Don Pedro’s daughter prattled on to Pablo. He explained to her that we were mother and daughter and this seemed to delight her. When we left she broke off a Hibiscus flower and gave one to each of us.

We left with many good byes and good wishes. As I walked away down the wooden path then back to the boat I knew that something very special had just occurred and felt very grateful for the experience.

The rest of the trip was easy if a bit hot as we were no longer covered by the trees and the wind had all but died away.

I am taking advantage of this rain to record today’s adventure.  Tomorrow we move closer to San Jose to a different hotel. Don’t know quite what to expect but I will, as always, keep you posted.

VQC #73: The Garden of Eden…at night

The Scene at Night, Tabacon Hot Springs

As I have never been to Costa Rica I did not really know what to expect.  As a nature lover I fully expected to enjoy myself.  What I was not prepared for is the power of the rain forest and being so near an active volcano.  I’m not sure if it’s fair to call this the jungle but I like the smell and feel of that word a bit better than rain forest.

There is an amazing paradise here called the Tabacon Grand Spa which is built around some hot springs. This water, which is full of minerals, is heated by the volcano before it rushes down the mountain to this collection of pools surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. People just come here to walk through the gardens and soak in the pools.  It feels like a living Gauguin painting, with people lolling on the lawns and sitting around the pools. Brightly colored plants and lizards accent the green backdrop.

Lat evening I had the consummate pleasure of having a massage in one of the spa’s little bungalows tucked away in the tropical garden. The spa itself is a beautifully designed and laid out space, with a pool in the middle fed by the hot springs.  It was just nice to be unplugged and have no agenda except to just BE there.

By the time my spa time was over it was dark out so I decided to explore the gardens and the baths at night.  It was a whole different world from in the day. The “jungle” was alive with sound and movement. Toads hopped along the path, people moved languidly from one pool to the next.  A small group of young people sat on the little lawn from which you can see the volcano.  I went and stood there for a while hoping to catch a glimpse of the red lava flows.  I did not see this but I did get to stand among the trees and watch the fireflies twinkle around me. After this I walked around the paths just enjoying the sultry atmosphere around me, steam occasionally wafting over me and fogging up my glasses.  I stood and watched some bathers under the water falls for a bit before heading down the hill along the little paths and crossing the bridges before coming to the bottom.

This place is really so wild that I find it hard to describe.  Right now I am sitting in the room listening to the roll of thunder and watching the rain pour down outside.

I can definitely envision bringing a Vision Quest Retreat here.  If you have interest drop me a line and join my mailing list.

VQC #72: The Foot of the Volcano

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

I have gone away on the eve of my 40th Birthday for some adventure and energy gathering. Arrived in Costa Rica on the 20th and have been pretty much non stop since then.

The first day we hiked in the Arenal National Park to see the volcano and the Arenal lake.  About a two mile journey to the top to get a view of the most active volcano in the country.  It was a truly awesome sight to see the smoke rising from the peak and to watch hot boulders hurtle down the hill. There is something magic about a semi hollow mountain that houses a sleeping dragon.

That same afternoon I did the sky tram and zip lines.  A gondola takes you about 2000 ft off the ground above much of the rain forest canopy.  I can not really adequately describe the feeling of being amidst so much lush greenery.  I had never done a zip line before and was very excited. The first long run takes you out over a huge ravine and you go about 80 miles/hr.  I felt like I was flying between the mountains the wind rushing past my ears.  I could look down into the valley below and at other times out over the lake.  There were about 8 zip lines in all that helped you traverse down the mountain.  I highly recommend this.

Today was the rain forest trek on the hanging bridges.  This hike takes you on the forest floor and then eventually up the mountain and across several suspension bridges that allow you to walk among the tree tops. Our guide pointed out some very cool birds, poisonous frogs, plants, insects and yes…I did see MONKEYS!  Mantled Howler Monkeys to be more precise…noisy black and gold monkeys that make the jungle sound like the jungle.  Then the rain started.  I donned my camouflage rain poncho and kept trekking through the downpour as the monkeys howled louder and louder.  It was surreal…wild and fantastic.

(This last installment does not bring me to the end of the day…there will be more but I needed to do this quick travelogue.)

VQC #71: Gathering Energy

Rebirth of the Time of Peace (Cutts)

After what seems like a whirlwind of activity over the past few months things have quieted down, but I feel like this is just the quiet before the storm. This often happens when it is time for me to rest up before the next big push. So what is the next big push?  Actually the signs have been pretty clear as to the direction in which I need to head now. I don’t want to be too specific on this forum but let’s just say the concentration is heading toward Book II in the Adventures of Isabelle and toward the retreats.

There are other changes a foot as well on a deeper or higher plane, depending how you look at it. I am heading into a birthday which is always a time full of magic and a lot of synchronicity…wild stuff usually happens around this time. This birthday is a very important one because many things are about to change. Again I don’t want to be too specific but let’s just say I am being moved to a different level in my life.

Now the really good news…I will be spending this birthday on an adventure in nature…which is my favorite thing in the world. It is going to be a time to reflect and generally just have fun.  I will as always keep you posted.

Hey if you are a woman and want to participate in the Vision Quest Project around the book I’m writing please complete the Vision Quest Survey!

Much continued success & well-being,

Nicole

VQC #70 Living My Life Like it’s Golden

Discussing Isabelle on You Tube

Sitting in my kitchen watching the rain pour down. Finally coming to rest after much activity. All good…all in the service of living my Vision, just didn’t leave much time for capturing it in this blog…didn’t leave much time for reflection.

Between the debut of The Adventures of Isabelle in Many Paths, Many Feet and the Women’s Dream to Design to Destiny Conference I have not had much time to catch my breath…then there was other work too.

I am really grateful for all of it but also happy to have this little bit of time to take stock before I set off on my next adventure.  I am turning my sites to resuming work on the non-fiction book about women living their visions and on Book II of the Adventures of Isabelle.

As always inviting you to share your stories of living your visions and to take the Vision Quest Survey where I am collecting stories and data for the non-fiction book on women living their visions. (I need about 500 more responses)

What are you working on and how are you living your life?

#69: Writing

I’m taking a break from writer’s block to write.

If you follow this blog you know it is a chronicle of the process of writing  a book and pursuing my other visions i.e. helping others to clarify and achieve their visions of success.  Since beginning this process about two years ago my vision has taken many twists and turns.  I am still working on the non-fiction book on women living their visions and still collecting data. If you would like to be included in that project and possibly have your story told please click The Vision Quest Project.

One of the turns this process has taken is a foray into writing fiction. This unexpected turn came about when I was asked to submit a piece for the anthology Many Paths, Many Feet, which is due in March .  For some reason a sort of fairy tale emerged. I had never really intended to write fiction but here it was.  I found out that I had a story, one that has pretty much been writing itself.  This unexpected turn has led me to take a writing class. I figure if I am going to do this I better learn something about it. So, I had my first class today at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda, MD.  I think I am going to like the class.  Our teacher Ann McLaughlin has published five novels and taught at American University so I feel pretty sure she will be helpful.

What about the writer’s block you say?  Well I’m in Book II of The Adventures of Isabelle and last night I kinda hit a snag and didn’t feel like writing…I am not panicked just yet.  My instinct says to skip around and work on a scene that has some energy behind it and don’t force scenes that do not.  What scene that is going to be I’m not sure.  Right now it feels like a scene of a girl sitting in front of her fireplace on a cold snowy day taking a nap after working on her blog, but we shall see.

As always I will keep you posted and of course invite you to do the same…drop me a line and let me know how the pursuit of your visions. dreams, or goals is coming along.

Much continued success!

#68: Synchronicity to Synchrodestiny

(The Angel of Death Descends… a page from the Falnama )

Before we begin…do you believe in synchronicity?

I ask because the synchronicity surrounding the fiction piece I’m writing is OUT OF CONTROL right now! The book “The Adventures of Isabelle” (working title) is an epic fairy tale about a half mortal half g*ddess princess and, of course, her wild adventures. I really had no intentions of writing fiction, it just happened (which is a part of the synchronicity I’m talking about) and I’m having so much fun with it. Even though the work is fiction it involves research. I’m drawing from myths from all over the world so the research mainly centers on this as well as a bit of pirate lore (more on that later). I realized yesterday that I’m engaging in a sort of organic research process that relies on synchronicity. It’s almost like magic.  When I need a bit of information it seems to drop out of the sky.  If I try to force it, it does not work but when I follow my instincts the things that make a strong impression on me seem to belong in the story.

Example: Yesterday I went on a mission to see Falnama: The Book of Omens at the Sackler Gallery (near the Smithsonian Castle). I had seen the poster in the metro underground and knew I needed to learn about it. After visiting some clients across the street at the Dept of Energy I had time to go. I was looking around wondering what I was supposed to see. I expected some huge revelation, some character info or a plot point, but nothing was jumping out at me and frankly I was not really feeling the exhibit.  I was a bit irritated, then I realized that I was forcing it.  I had an expectation about how it was supposed to go and that was wrong.  That’s when I realized that my research was more organic than that and that only if something struck me was I to use it. And a few things did stand out so perhaps that was all I was supposed to get from that exhibit. I discovered something else really powerful on the way to the museum shop (a statue of one of 64 Yoginis) and once in the shop (a poem by Rumi that exactly echoed something I had read the night before about dying in Deepak Chopra’s Book of Secrets). So I realized that even though I went there with a certain expectation, what was to be revealed to me was different than what I expected. That’s when it struck me that I was engaged in synchronistic research and how cool, easy and fun it is…so much more fun than forcing it.

Then the wildest thing happened that night when I was back at home writing. I needed some information on a G*ddess so I went to my 240 pg coffee table book called, what else Goddess and was flipping through it. On the third page that I opened (p. 142) I saw a black speck between the pages.  At first I thought it was a piece of lint but on closer inspection saw that it was a tiny baby spider crawling on the pages.  I wondered what he could be doing there since he would have had to survive between the pages of this heavy book. I just blew him off then re-focused on the page that I had opened to. That’s when I saw the title…Athena and Arachne.

What does all of this mean?  It’s hard to describe, but for me it means that I can let go and follow my instincts and that what comes to me is what is supposed to come to me.

Do you have experiences like these and if so what do you make of them? Drop me a line and let me know.
